Honey's Story
Chapter 4
After Surgery Weekly Recovery Updates

10/14/99
Spay and orthopaedic surgery to realign broken femur on right rear leg and drill Intermedullarry pin into the two bones pieces. 3.5 hour surgery

10/16/99
Finally relieved herself after 2 days of literally not moving one inch from where I placed her on her bed when we arrived home from surgeries two days ago.

10/18/99
Wanted outside for the first time since surgery!!! Yea!!!
Ate by herself for the first time (I had been handfeeding her cooked chicken)
Stood up a couple times a day and moved around the kitchen a little bit

10/25/99
Things I can do by myself now:
get up and lay down
go down the back steps to go outside
use da bafroom (without any help)
and I can get up the back steps by myself!
(mom hasn't seen me do this yet, but she turns around and I am back in da house, hee hee)

11/1/99 More Things I can do:
Go down the steps to the garage to go out
Put weight on my sore leg
I even do a little hop-run kinda thing after I poop now
I try to kick my legs after I poop too but can't quite do that yet
I like to catch a few rays for a bout 5 minutes when mom gets home now too
I eat like a pig and love my ground round, veggies & pasta and my favorite is Blueberry Bagels!!!!
I bark real big if anyone walks by our house when me and mom are out front. I stand in front of mom and lean on her just in case she needs me to get dem.

11/3/99
I dropped down in play posture then swatted mom with my front feet and RAN right up the back steps into the house all by myself!!! I chased mom around the house then tried to kill dat bird again...I hate his guts.

11/14/99

I played and ran and chased my mom in the back yard today. I smile and laugh when I run towards my mom and she thinks I'm silly. I even dropped into play posture to play with my aunt Jane then fell on my butt but I got right back up and ran to to the door again.

12/2/99

I was supposed to get the pin outta my leg today but Dr. Daniels had some kids who needed emergency surgery, which I know all about, so my pin MIGHT come out on MOnday Dec 6, 1999 now. We gotta take more pix first to see if it can come. My mom can't wait to see how I do with it out.

I can do lots more stuff now too. I try to jump up on my mom when she comes home and can kinda stand on my back legs but she sez I shouldn't be doing that so I sit real quick and give my mom "high five". Mom thinks I might know what "sit", "stay" and "down" mean too but she isn't asking me to do these things til I can use my leg mo bettah.

12/25/99

Wowowowow! We did something called Christmas today that was a lot of fun! We had company and I got to be the only one loose in da house so mom and our friends could use my room to fix all dese groceries! Dem other kids were down the hall and prolly jealous but I don't care. I got some kewl stuffies from my friends Bobette, Kaiser and Marriah in NY and had a real good time playing wif dem. Den dat Hannah grrrl came out and stole all my toys and put dem on her bed when I was outside. My mom had to steal dem back and put dem in my room so they didn't get shredded.

I hope we do dis Christmas thing every year, ya get lotsa schtuff to eat and have lotsa company which I like a lot. I know everyone comes to see me!

1/25/00

On January 11, 2000 we lost our home to a devastating housefire. My beloved Libby awakened me to our homes in flames. Because of Libby's bravery I was able to save HOney, Hannah, Harleigh, Jones and Kirbie. Libby was overcome by smoke inhilation after she woke me up and did not make it out of the horrific inferno. We also lost our 4 birds and little prairie dog grrrrl, Rudy. HONey was the closest to the flames and had it not been for my guardian angel Libby, who gave her life for ours, this story would have ended on that horrible day.

3/2/2000

HOWL-LE-LUJAH!!!!!!!!!!! HOney got the pin out of her leg today and the leg bends and she puts weight on it!!! Woooooo Hoooooooo!! The foot appears to have some permanent nerve damage but she does use it and put the pad down today while still in her drunken stupor so she may not always knuckle over on it once she gets used to using the leg correctly again! We have waited a long time for this day to come and it finally did so we are doing the Giant happy dance for HOney-Bunny-Boo-Boo grrrrrrrrl!!

3/25/2000

HOney was asked to be in the Texas Kennel Club (TKC) Rescue Parade today at the show in Ft. Worth along with 25 other pure bred kids who have been rescued from bad situations. Many shared physical injuries much like what HOney had been through before she came to live with me.

The purpose of the Rescue Parade is to educate people about adopting these wonderful dogs from local rescue organizations and shelters and to honor the dogs with the recognition they deserve for enduring the hardship they were subjected to by uncaring previous owners.

Each of the dogs has a story that is read by the announcer while the dog and "handler" walk around the ring. At the end of the walk a nice Certificate of Appreciation with the dog's name and breed is presented by the President of the Dallas Coalition of Animal Owners that says, " Star of the "Showcase of Rescue Dogs"for the New Millenium. The dogs also receive a pretty blue bandana with the AKC logo on it in two corners framed with paw prints around the edge. Needless to say there isn't a dry eye in the place.

The Certificate will be added to HOney's newest Chapter 5 along with recent photos of HOney grrrl.

More to come....
